Incredible.

Our date night got cancelled, and so I went to my dad’s house last night, instead of going to the art museum with him like we’d planned.  I only stayed 2 hours; I have three tests today, and it’s hard to study with four-year-olds running all over the place.

When I got there, the kids were sleeping and Dad had me wake them up.  So I went into the bed room that the twins share, but instead of immediately waking them up, I just watched them sleep for a little while.  They are the most precious little children.

I put my hand on McKenna’s back, to gently wake her up.  She sleeps on the top bunk, and so her face was eye level with mine.  When she opened her eyes, she just sort of lay in bed and we stared at one another for a few minutes.  We whispered back and forth to one another.  She said that I should wake Christian up by yelling, “Boo!” and I whispered back that that wasn’t very nice.

Half-crawling into the bottom bunk to wake Christian up was harder, and he moaned and whined and genuinely did not want to get up.  When he’s awake, he’s always moving, and it was almost weird to see him lying there so still while he was asleep.

I asked McKenna if she needed help getting down off her bed, she informed me that she was a “Big girl” now and could climb down the ladder all by herself.  Watching her proudly start climbing down the ladder’s rungs, I was struck by how much my little sister and brother have both grown.  I started thinking back to when they’d been born.  They were born a full 2 months premature, and spent nearly that long in the NICU.  They were so tiny.  McKenna had just barely made 2 lbs.  I think Christian was around 1½ lbs.  Had I been allowed to touch them, they would have fit in one of my hands.  We spent about a month, terrified they’d die.

As she was climbing down the ladder, Mckenna suddenly stopped.

What are you staring at?”

“You,” I replied.

“Why?”

“Because you’re beautiful.”

Isn’t it incredible to think that God looks at us the same way?

I read this one and thought…if you ever decided to have a family…you would make a great mom!
