The concept of praying for one’s future spouse is not one that I’ve ever put much thought into. To pray for someone I’ve never met yet, and whom I know absolutely nothing about, seems sort of… different to me. In all honesty, I’ve never given any thought to doing it before. I’d never even heard about anyone doing it before. But, in the last week, I’ve heard two adults talk about how they started praying for their future spouse at a really young age, before they’d even met anyone… It just sort of seems all too coincidental for me.
This morning, I tried to pray for my future husband. It was harder than I’d thought it’d be. I don’t know what I want in a future husband. Shoot man, I don’t even know if I want a future husband. Sara and I were watching Robin Hood a few weeks ago, and, after watching Kevin Costner rescue Marion from the evil Sheriff, Sara made a comment that, even though she’s a tomboy, she’d still love to have somebody rescue her. I said I’d rather have my own sword, which has to give you some indication of how I feel about needing anyone, especially someone of the opposite sex.
At any rate, I tried to pray for my future husband. I prayed that he would be a godly man. I prayed that he would love and accept me, and that he would encourage me to grow. I prayed that he’d be supportive, and that he’d love my families and my church. And that’s as far and I got. What else do you pray for?
Hi Melisa, Just got on line, read your post…would you believe I had something pertaining to praying for a future husband on my post today
. Yep, I made a small list of qualities my wife had been praying/looking for in a future husband…and I “fit” everyone…Won’t tell you what they are, but if you curious, you can read about it here: http://hearttoheart.wordpress.com/2008/01/21/when-my-wife-had-one-in-the-oven-not/
The list of qualities is in the middle of the post. I’m thinking God may be up to something…your fellow blogger DM
I changed the title on the post…don’t let that throw you…it’s the same post. DM
I usually pray for standard stuff: His will, His protection, His provisions.
If something touches my heart, then I what I need doesn’t really matter much. I will then pray for somebody else.
In this case, I will pray for you.
Melissa, you have such a pure heart! If I were praying for my “future spouse” I think I would make it very simple. “Lord, that you would bless Him and mold him into the very man He was created to be so that our life together will glorify you.” God will never give you second best. He won’t give you someone who will tear you down or not support you. Your husband will be a man of integrity and will reflect and embody the character of Christ. He will lead you and your family. We complicate everything with lists, God knows exactly who and what we need. Trust in that. What do I pray for? That my oldest son and his girlfriend will give their hearts to Him and serve Him. I pray for my future grandchildren, that they will be the first of many generations to serve Him with their whole hearts. Love you!
“God will never give you second best.”
No question.
